Garage Floor Maintenance: Do’s and Don’ts

Garage Floor CoatingCleaning, Epoxy Flooring

Toledo’s climate can challenge the durability of any garage floor. Epoxy coatings, with their blend of strength and low maintenance, provide a superior solution that outperforms other flooring options. To keep your epoxy-coated floor in peak condition, you’ll need a few essential garage floor maintenance tools.

What You’re Going to Need:

  • Sturdy broom
  • Bucket with a wringer
  • String mop

If you want something even more effective, consider grabbing these:

  • Leaf blower
  • Wash & Wax automotive detergent
  • Microfiber dust mop

Pro-Tip: Regular household detergents can leave behind a residue that attracts dirt, and they can dull your floor over time. Stay away from them!

Detailed Cleaning Routine

Begin by sweeping or blowing away any loose dirt and debris with a broom or leaf blower. You can’t paint a dusty canvas, and you can’t mop up rocks — they’ll drag all over and scratch things up. Ensuring a clean surface prevents scratches and scuffs.

Next, prepare your cleaning solution by mixing warm water with 1 oz of Wash & Wax detergent per gallon in a bucket. This solution not only cleans but also helps maintain the shine of your epoxy coating. Dip the string mop into the bucket, wring out the excess water, and mop the floor thoroughly. Focus on any stubborn spots that might need extra scrubbing.

After mopping, allow the floor to air dry naturally. For added safety, use a microfiber dust mop to dry the floor completely, reducing any risk of slipping. This step is particularly important in high-traffic areas of your garage.

For exterior areas such as driveways and patios, the approach is slightly different. Start by hosing down the area to wash away dirt and grime. Then, use a foam squeegee to quickly remove any remaining water, ensuring the surface is left clean and dry.

Following this routine will keep your epoxy-coated floor looking its best.
